THE ADVANTAGE — Fall 2006

E&A Comings and Goings in the World of Philanthropy

Susan Luenberger Suarez and Eleanor Sacks are assisting with joint resource development for the National Agenda for Community Foundations.

Angela Powers is helping the leadership of the Jewish Community Foundation and the Hartford Courant Foundation, both in Connecticut, evaluate their grant and program activities and plan for the future.

Helmer Ekstrom is assisting the York County Community Foundation (PA) to develop a new strategic plan. Together with Bryan Clontz and Susan Suarez, Helmer is conducting an asset development assessment for the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County (CA). Helmer and Angela are conducting a study and developing a plan for the 50th anniversary of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham (AL). Together with Angela, Helmer designed and facilitated the strategic planning process for the new entity created as a result of the merger of the Connecticut Fund for the Environment (CT) and Save the Sound (NY). Helmer presented a session on creating a business analysis dashboard for individual foundations at the recent MicroEdge Solutions Conference.

Bryan Clontz presented three sessions at the Community Foundations Conference, including a workshop on Family Philanthropy: How Far to Go and Where to Draw the Line; and two breakout sessions, Family Philanthropy: Mission, Strategies and Structure, and Charitable Remainder Trusts: The Unique Issues Facing Community Foundations. Bryan recently completed a development assessment and plan for the Central Indiana Community Foundation, and facilitated Board retreats for several other community foundations. Bryan also recently completed a charitable gift annuity risk audit for four community foundations. Congratulations to Bryan on being elected to the Board of the National Committee on Planned Giving.

Ekstrom & Associates is pleased to welcome Joan F. Gourley to the E&A team. Joan’s experience in philanthropy includes senior staff positions at the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund.
